Edinburgh shopping

The George Street boutiques and department stores of John Lewis, Jenners and Harvey Nichols may be the mainstays of the Edinburgh shopping scene, but there are plenty of great originals too. Here is our selection:

Walker Slater

This is the place to get authentic Scottish fashion such as tweeds and cashmeres:

Edinburgh Books

Near to Grassmarket, there’s a stretch of second-hand bookstores of which this is possibly the finest:

Cornelius

A really brilliant wine and beer seller at the top of Easter Road:

W Armstrong and Son

Three different locations across Edinburgh (the Grassmarket location is the biggest and best) all with an amazing array of second-hand clothing on offer (from Barbours to Harris Tweed jackets):

Avalanche Records

This Grassmarket store is an old style record shop and the retail arm of an actual record label of the same name. A great spot for browsing vinyl:

Royal Mile Whiskies

On the High Street (or Royal Mile) just down from the Castle, I think this is the best place to buy whisky as it stocks lots of off-piste originals and single vintages as well as all the usual suspects – and you can usually taste before you buy:

Valvona & Crolla

An Edinburgh institutions, this Italian deli and café has three outlets across the city, the best of which is at the top of Leith Walk, in a street called Elm Row. Fantastic shop!
